Zurich, Limmatquai: The Crossroads of Modernity (c. 1900)
This striking photograph of Limmatquai by Johannes Meiner captures the vibrant energy of Zurich at the turn of the century. It serves as a visual record of a city in transit, where the old world and the new briefly shared the same cobblestones.
A Witness to Urban Evolution
In the foreground, the juxtaposition of eras is palpable: a modern electric tram crosses paths with a traditional horse-drawn carriage, while cyclists and pedestrians navigate the busy quay. On the left, the building at Limmatquai 4 stands out with the prominent signage of Conditorei Schurter, a famous pastry shop of the era. The image also documents the electrification of the city’s infrastructure; the tram visible belongs to the early generations of electric cars that replaced horse-drawn lines starting in 1894. In the distance, the river and church steeples remain as permanent anchors in this evolving landscape.
