About Daniel Rojatz

Daniel Rojatz, an Austrian photographer and artist, focuses on abstract compositions and detailed works inspired by old photographs, poster fragments, and found objects shaped by time. His ‘overpainting’ technique, resembling calligraphy, emphasizes transformation over representation, aiming to transcend mere documentation and create something new from what has been seen and found.

‘I’m in search of the aura of the real that was lost in between the original trace and its countless reiterations. I encounter forms and shapes along the way that seem alive, like ghosts. These moments I keep and share as a tribute to their kindness.’

About the artwork

‘Der Theatral’ is an overpainting work by Daniel Rojatz (aka rmtrl) based on original negative plates from around 1910, which are part of the private blackprint collection. The two plates belong to a lot of approximately 100 negatives, taken by an Austrian photographer, from which the very first blackprint edition, ‘Nu Évanouissant’, was produced.

This series by Daniel Rojatz consists of 17 unique works, all printed by blackprint on artisanal “Cartalafranca” paper, handcrafted in the Swiss canton of Ticino by artist François Lafranca. Each physical piece is linked to a unique digital counterpart.

Each printed edition is delivered in a handcrafted frame with museum glass, numbered, signed, and accompanied by a blockchain-certified Verisart certificate of authenticity.
